Automated road law enforcement is one of today’s most sought-after traffic management applications: being able to automatically detect vehicles, calculate their speed and enforce infractions while inducing a calming effect on drivers, is a tremendous advantage for city administrations and legislative bodies.
However, reliable speed calculation is still a challenge. Many extraneous factors can impact the validity of results, and as such, the selected technology must provide very precise and consistent measurements to be enforceable by law. Such systems must also be energy-efficient and rugged to ensure 24/7 operation, rain or shine.
When TrafficLogix, a company specializing in the design and development of various traffic calming solutions, was designing its Enforcer Cam® product, they wanted to take things to the next level by capitalizing on collected data to enable additional features, such as Wi-Fi connectivity and real-time reporting to nearby enforcement officers.
To achieve this objective, the company’s engineers needed to obtain a core sensing technology providing rich and very accurate data. Their Enforcer Cam also had to be able to detect incoming traffic moving at speeds of up to 180 km/h at a distance of 35 m, with an error margin of less than 3%. In addition, the solution had to be capable of distinguishing different vehicles from one another in dense traffic, sufficiently robust to withstand outdoor operation for extended periods in harsh weather, temperature and lighting conditions, and remain undetectable by radar and other speed-trap detection devices.
After a thorough business analysis and review of several similar technologies, TrafficLogix decided on LeddarTech sensing to meet the core requirements of its new product.
