Technology

Leddar™, an acronym for Light Emitting Diode Detection And Ranging, is based on the time-of-flight of light principle. The innovative breakthrough of the Leddar™ technology has enabled the use of LED lighting, either in the visible or infrared spectrum, for detection and ranging.

Contrary to collimated types of emitters (laser), the LED emitters of the Leddar™ sensor actively illuminate the area of interest thus greatly facilitating the alignment of the system. In return, the multi-channel Leddar™ sensor receiver collects the backscatter of the reflected light and measures the time taken for the emitted light to return back to the sensor.

  • Since the measurement is based on the speed of light, the performance and accuracy is very high.
  • The technology is immune to environmental disturbances related to acoustic and electromagnetic noise—as well as variance in ambient light conditions.
  • Thanks to several patent-pending techniques and to advanced signal processing, the Leddar™ technology is low-power without comprising the range in object detection and the accuracy in performance.
  • Since the processing technology analyses the entire light span emitted by LED lighting, the Leddar™ technology is able to detect solid objects in the background of “soft” ones. It can distinguish any type (plastic, metallic, etc.) of solid objects (vehicles, bicycles, pedestrians, poles, etc.) from “soft” objects (fog, rain, mist, snow).
  • The multi-channel Leddar™ sensor also provides excellent lateral discrimination of detected objects—this feature provides the basis for object tracking.
